Born and raised in Lowell, Mass. My uncle was in the biz and I would hang out with him on weekends. He threw me on the air when in high school, 1967, and I have been doing it since. Through the years worked in news, sports talk, did school football and college hockey play-by-play, DJ.
Radio gives you opportunities that most people don’t get in a lifetime. Cool things like host concerts, backstage parties, hang with sports people, meet a lot of folks from the music world, I’ve been fortunate the last 40 years. From Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry, to Carlos Santana and Brad Delp (God bless him) I have been real lucky. Did live radio shows with Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, which was cool. Did live motorsports TV show on Sports Channel New England.—that was cool. Anybody remember SCNE? I’ll tell the grandkids someday. They’ll say huh?
I have spent my entire life in and around New England auto racing. I’ve been a speedway announcer for 33 years and am currently calling races at Lee USA Speedway in N.H. and with the True Value Modified Racing Series, a touring division.
I’m a beloved Red Sox… and are you ready? Diehard NY Football Giants fan. I’m one of those New Englanders that latched on as a kid when we had no pro football team in Boston and never looked back. I bleed BLUE. Sorry!
I’m married, with six kids, 11 grandkids. It amazes me I’m still playing great classic rock music on the radio after all these years. I’ve been blessed. I only wish Janis, Jimi, Morrison, and Stevie Ray, could have hung out a little longer.
Listen to John "Spider" Spence weekends on The Mill
